Dental Insurance
We've answered some common questions about dental insurance here. Still, please don't hesitate to contact Dental Wellness of Charlotte at (704) 317-7337 if you have additional questions or need help navigating your dental insurance benefits.
Do I Need to Have Dental Insurance to Receive Treatment?
No! You don't have to have dental insurance to see our dentist, and we're happy to work with you on payment arrangements if you require extensive treatment.
Patients without dental insurance may be interested in our Dental Wellness Club, which helps patients receive the preventive teeth cleanings, checkups, and x-rays they need twice yearly for one low yearly membership fee. Dental Wellness Club members also enjoy extra yearly savings on restorative and cosmetic procedures.
Some of our patients have found that a wellness membership is actually more beneficial to them than dental insurance, as that has treatment limitations, deductibles, and yearly maximums that can prevent them from getting the treatment they need.
What Insurance Plans Do You Work With?
Dr. Shirman does work with all major dental insurance companies, and we're happy to file claims on your behalf. Our friendly and knowledgeable team will also answer questions about your dental insurance if you need help navigating your benefits.
Is Choosing an Out-of-Network Provider More Expensive Than an In-Network Provider?
You may receive less coverage for procedures with an out-of-network dentist since they don't have a contract with your dental insurance as an in-network provider does. However, this means that your dentist can provide you with a high level of care that meets their quality standards using the best materials for your needs.
In-network dentists may have to compromise their materials or treatment standards to cover the cost of care not covered by dental insurance.
Out of Network Doesn't Mean Out of Benefits
To help you decide on what’s best for you and your family, consider the following information about in-network and out-of-network insurance coverage:
In-network – If a dentist signs a contract with certain insurance companies, those insurance companies then control what the dentist can charge for the dental services they provide. This typically means that the in-network dentist will charge a lower price for dental work. Sounds good, right? The issue with in-network charges is that the dentist may attempt to see many more patients to make up the difference, and the quality of your treatment could suffer. This may compromise treatment or compromise the quality of materials used during your treatment for things like materials, instruments, labs, etc.
Out-of-network – If you choose an out-of-network dentist, they still file with your insurance company, but they can set their own prices and offer treatments and services that your insurance company may deny. In short, the quality of your dental care could likely improve with an out-of-network provider. Also, your insurance company may pay an out-of-network dentist nearly the same amount as an in-network dentist. It’s certainly worth checking!

Regular dental visits are essential for maintaining a healthy smile and preventing oral health issues like gum disease or tooth decay. The general recommendation is to visit your dentist in South Charlotte every six months for a routine checkup and professional cleaning. However, individual needs may vary based on factors like oral health, lifestyle, and existing dental conditions.
For most patients, biannual visits help detect early signs of cavities, gum disease, and other dental concerns before they become more serious. Our team provides professional dental cleanings to remove plaque and tartar buildup that you can’t remove at home with daily brushing and flossing.
Some individuals—such as those with gum disease, a history of frequent cavities, or ongoing dental treatments—may need more frequent visits. Our South Charlotte dental office can provide a personalized recommendation based on your specific oral health needs.
Skipping regular checkups can lead to costly and more extensive treatments later on. So, by focusing on routine dental care and making it a priority, you can enjoy a happy, healthy smile for years to come.
