Preventive Dentistry Protects Your Smile

When you visit your Charlotte dentist every six months for teeth cleanings and checkups, you are protecting more than just your dental health. You’re also guarding your overall health and your budget.

The Oral Systemic Connection

Science has shown us close links between gum disease and non-dental health concerns like:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Dementia
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke

The bacteria that cause gum disease can enter your bloodstream and move to other parts of your body, which contributes to the inflammation causing those conditions. Studies tell us that patients with gum disease are more likely to have or develop these other concerns and vice versa.

When you visit Dr. Shirman for routine checkups and teeth cleanings, we can detect problems like gum disease early and help you treat and sometimes even reverse the condition.

Save Yourself Time and Money in South Charlotte

The same is true of tooth decay. Dr. Shirman can detect it early when it’s a small cavity that a simple filling can treat. If you wait until a tooth hurts, it has already developed a significant problem like a tooth infection and likely needs more complicated treatment like a root canal and crown, which is a greater impact on your budget.

We focus on preventive teeth cleanings and checkups to save our patients from having to spend time in the dental chair and money from their wallets.

Comprehensive Dentistry Makes It Convenient for You

Dr. Shirman is committed to bringing his patients the most advanced techniques and services, which means he offers comprehensive procedures you may not find at every dental practice, such as:

Patient comfort is one of our primary focuses. So, we offer dental sedation like nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for anxious patients and solutions for delivering pain-free injections for patients who need teeth repaired.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental cleanings are noninvasive, relaxing, and never painful. In fact, you may find reclining in our comfy dental chair pleasant!

Your Comprehensive Dental Cleaning

Our hygienist uses special tools to clear plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the teeth, including difficult-to-reach locations at the back of the mouth. The hygienist is also looking for gum recession and other potential issues. All findings will be reported to the dentist, and then you’ll have a conversation to discuss the issue. Your teeth cleaning in South Charlotte, NC, can take up to an hour, depending on the severity of debris buildup.

After cleaning your teeth thoroughly, we finish with a polish. Your hygienist may also provide a fluoride treatment if your enamel is at-risk for potential issues like decay.

Then it’s time to ask questions or share your concerns with the hygienist. In turn, the hygienist can provide advice for at-home brushing and flossing practices or discuss rinses to keep your smile healthy between six-month checkups and teeth cleanings.

Family Dentistry Technology

iTero Scanner at our south Charlotte dental office

iTero LuminaScanner

We’re pleased to introduce the iTero Luminascanner at Dental Wellness of Charlotte. This dental wand captures 3-D images of your teeth and gums, eliminating the need for messy impression materials. We can use these images to plan treatment, detect cavities, create digital models, and educate you about your dental health.

The iTero scanner also allows you to see what your dentist sees during an exam, via a chairside screen. Additionally, we use it as part of your initial dental visit, not merely as a diagnostic or treatment aid. That way, you'll better understand your current dental health or why we may recommend specific treatments.

Digital X-Rays

Digital X-Rays

Digital x-rays are an invaluable tool that Dr. Shirman uses to diagnose dental problems as early as possible. Taking x-rays each year provides a baseline that we can use to monitor your dental health and spot new concerns right away.

Taking digital images provides a tool that Dr. Shirman can use to help you make the best decisions about your dental care. In addition, the images are immediately available and easily shared with other providers if needed.

Digital x-rays are safer for our patients as they emit 80 percent less radiation than film x-rays. They're also safer for the environment since we don't need any chemicals for development.

Panoramic X-Rays

Panoramic X-Rays

A panoramic x-ray offers Dr. Shirman a complete view of your smile with all of your teeth at once, unlike bite-wing x-rays, which focus on one or two teeth. This image is helpful for planning orthodontic treatment or looking at wisdom teeth and their development, among other things.
