South Charlotte Dental Implants

Living with missing teeth can be challenging. Whether it’s feeling self-conscious about gaps in your smile or struggling to chew the foods you would typically eat, you may wish you had your natural teeth back. With dental implants, you can essentially do just that!

Dental implants in Charlotte flawlessly recreate how your original pearly whites looked, felt, and functioned – and they can potentially last a lifetime. And, with the advanced training that Dr. Sergei Shirman has completed, you can have the entire treatment done in one location.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is unique in that it replaces your root and your tooth. There’s no other tooth replacement option that can do both.

The implant takes the place of your root after Dr. Shirman carefully places it into your jawbone, and we give it time to integrate and fuse with your bone. After it completely fuses with your bone, it’s ready to support your new tooth or crown.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

Dental Implant Illustration, charlotte ncAs a graduate of the Engel Implant Institute, Dr. Shirman can conveniently perform every step of the dental implant process right here in our Charlotte dental office. Of course, every patient is different, but most can expect to go through four phases:

  1. Consultation – During the initial visit, Dr. Shirman will closely examine your mouth and jaw, take x-rays, and use 3-D images to create a treatment plan.
  2. Dental implant surgery – Thanks to Dr. Shirman’s expertise, you can have the implants surgically placed without needing to travel to a separate specialist’s office.
  3. Osseointegration & abutment placement – You’ll spend the next three to six months allowing your jawbone to heal and bond with the implant posts during an osseointegration process. Once your implant is properly fused with your bone, Dr. Shirman can attach metal connectors called abutments on top of them.
  4. Attachment of final restoration – Finally, your customized prosthetic tooth (porcelain crown) or teeth (dentures or a bridge) will be secured atop your abutments.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Discover the numerous advantages of dental implants, including their impressive success rate and longevity. Learn how they can enhance your oral health, preserve jawbone density, and restore your confidence with a natural-looking smile.
High Success Rate and Longevity
Dental implants boast an impressive success rate of 95 percent or higher, making them one of the most reliable options for tooth replacement. This high level of success is supported by extensive research and clinical studies, indicating that implants are a durable solution for patients with missing teeth. Also, dental implants can last a lifetime with proper care.
Jawbone Preservation and Tooth Stability
One of the standout benefits of dental implants is their ability to preserve the density and strength of your jawbone. When a tooth is lost, the jawbone can begin to deteriorate due to lack of stimulation, leading to further tooth loss and changes in facial structure. Implants act as artificial tooth roots, stimulating the jawbone, which helps maintain its integrity.
Restored Confidence and Natural Aesthetics
Implants restore the functionality of your mouth and enhance your smile, giving you the confidence to chew and speak. Many patients find their self-esteem improves after implants, as they regain a natural smile they once thought was lost. The custom design of implants makes them blend with your existing teeth, resulting in an authentic appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental implants, widely considered the gold standard for long-term tooth loss treatment, differ significantly from alternatives like dentures and bridges. Here are some of the most vital differences:

  • Structural integrity. Unlike dentures, which are removable, and bridges, which call for alterations to adjacent teeth, dental implants are surgically embedded into the jawbone, recreating the form and function of natural teeth and providing a stable and permanent foundation for replacements like dental crowns.
  • Bone health. Implants stimulate the jawbone, preventing the bone degradation that often accompanies tooth loss. Dentures and bridges do not address this issue.
  • Longevity. With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime. Dentures and bridges, meanwhile, typically require replacement every 7-15 years.
  • Superior chewing function. Implants offer superior chewing efficiency to dentures and bridges, allowing you to enjoy a full range of foods without restrictions.
  • Ease of maintenance. Dentures require regular removal for cleaning, while bridges require special tools for flossing. Implants, however, only require “normal” oral hygiene practices like brushing and flossing.
  • Comfort and confidence. Dental implants are anchored in place, eliminating the discomfort and risk of slipping or speech impediments common with dentures and allowing the wearer to bite, chew, speak, and smile with total confidence!

Dental implants are considered the gold standard in tooth replacement because they replace both your tooth and root.

This is so important because without a tooth root, your jawbone has nothing to keep it stimulated, and it begins to deteriorate. This can diminish support for neighboring teeth, resulting in more tooth loss and impacting your facial structure.

How Dental Implants Work

A dental implant takes the place of your root and integrates with your bone because it's made of biocompatible titanium. It keeps your bone healthy while supporting your new tooth, a custom porcelain crown. Getting dental implants in South Charlotte is the closest replacement to your natural teeth.

A dental bridge may be a good solution for patients who aren't candidates for tooth implants. This fixed appliance uses two dental crowns as anchors to healthy teeth to support one or more prosthetic teeth in between, which "bridge" the gap left by your missing teeth.
