Implant dentures are a step above traditional ones. Not only will they give you the full function of a natural smile again, but they’ll provide the support you need for a strong and healthy facial structure! However, it still might take some time to grow accustomed to them. Read on to learn five ways you can make the adjustment period a much smoother process.

#1: Practice Talking Frequently

A commonly difficult task for most patients is to feel normal while speaking with their implant dentures. But now that you won’t have to worry about them slipping off, you should feel more comfortable while wearing them. Try talking often at home, or practicing conversations with family and friends to get you used to their natural feel.

#2: Eat Soft Foods

Even after your dentist attaches the dentures to your implants, it can take a few weeks for your mouth to adjust. As with any dental procedure, you may feel mild soreness for some time. To reduce this, it’s best to eat soft meals like yogurt. Avoid excessive sugar content, as this can increase your risk of gum disease and cause early implant failure.

#3: Drink Plenty of Water

While drinking water is essential for your overall health, it can also wash away bacteria and food particles from your mouth. This will help preserve your implant site as well as your dentures while wearing them.

#4: Maintain Good Oral Hygiene Practices

To ensure your implants and dentures remain in good condition, it’s important that you keep a proper dental hygiene routine. By brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash—as well as soaking your restorations—you’ll protect your dentures and your gums from plaque buildup.

#5: Ask Your Dentist for Advice

If you’re ever having difficulties with the adjustment period, then you can always speak with your dentist. They can examine your implant dentures and your oral health, and will recommend the best practices and products to help you get used to them.

Even with an adjustment period, you should take the time to celebrate and enjoy your fully restored smile! It’ll usually take a week or two to become accustomed with them, and then you can be sure to appreciate the life-long benefits.
