Dental Wellness of Charlotte

What is the difference between DMD and DDS?

At one point or another, anyone researching dentists in South Charlotte has encountered a familiar question: “Why does it say ‘DMD’ after some dentists’ names, and ‘DDS’ after others?”

Simply, “DMD” refers to a “Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry.” This is one of two primary dental school degrees in the United States. The other, “DDS,” refers to a “Doctor of Dental Surgery” degree. Some universities award a DDS, others a DMD. It’s as simple as that!

DMD vs. DDS: What’s the Difference?

Despite the difference in titles, the skills, training, and qualifications for earning a DMD (as Dr. Sergei Shirman has) and a DDS are the same.

Each designation confirms that a dentist has successfully completed the required coursework, clinical training, and state and national licensing exams, and is qualified to provide care for a variety of oral health conditions. Whichever a dentist has, you can be confident they have the clinical knowledge and hands-on training to provide preventive, restorative, and cosmetic dental care.

The difference, frankly, comes down to what a particular dental school prefers. As far as patients are concerned, there is effectively no distinction.
